Everything You Need to Know about Afton’s Elkhorn Arch

When you think of arches, you may picture towering red rock formations in the desert or ancient Roman architecture. But Afton, Wyoming is the home of a totally unique and record-breaking arch that needs to be seen to be believed. The Elkhorn Arch is a one-of-a-kind landmark made entirely from elk antlers. Spanning Highway 89 in the heart of downtown Afton, this incredible structure is more than just an arch—it’s a must-see stop that tells the story of our town’s connection to nature and community.

The World’s Largest Elkhorn Arch

The Elkhorn Arch isn’t just unique—it’s massive! This beauty stretches 75 feet across and stands 18 feet tall. It’s made from 3,011 elk antlers and weighs over 15 tons. It holds the record for the largest arch of its kind in the entire world.

Not a single elk was harmed to build this stunning work of art. Every antler was naturally shed and carefully collected, making this arch a true celebration of the natural cycle of life. Elk antlers aren’t just impressive—they’re also renewable. Every spring, male elk shed their antlers after mating season, and by fall, they’ve grown back full-sized and ready for action. Most of the antlers used in the arch came from the National Elk Refuge in Jackson, Wyoming, where conservation efforts have been protecting these magnificent animals since 1912.

A Look Back at How It All Began

The story of the Elkhorn Arch started back in 1955, when local Boy Scouts had the idea to gather up shed elk antlers from the nearby National Elk Refuge. The Afton Chamber of Commerce decided to put those antlers to good use, and in 1958, the Elkhorn Arch was completed. Believe it or not, the whole project only cost about $2,500 back then. These days, the antlers alone would be worth around $300,000!

As if the Elkhorn Arch wasn’t already cool enough, it got an upgrade in the early 2000s thanks to local artist Jonathan LaBenne. He added two life-size bull elk sculptures to the top of the arch. These majestic wooden elk are captured mid-battle, their antlers locked just like they would be during the fall rut. Beneath them, a sign proudly declares, “Afton, Wyoming,” making for a totally unique photo-op!

Keeping Traditions Alive

Antler collecting is still a big deal in Star Valley. Every year, local Boy Scouts and other outdoor enthusiasts head to the National Elk Refuge with special permits to gather shed antlers. This helps prevent illegal poaching and raises money for scout projects through antler auctions. The auctions can bring in up to $47,000 annually, with some antlers selling for as much as $170 each. It’s a win-win for the community and conservation.

More Than Just an Arch

The Elkhorn Arch is more than a landmark—it’s the gateway to all the amazing things Afton has to offer. While you’re here, take a stroll through our charming downtown. From local shops to cozy cafes, there’s plenty to explore.

The Elkhorn Arch isn’t just a structure—it’s a symbol of Afton’s community spirit, love for nature, and dedication to preserving our heritage. It’s the perfect backdrop for your next road trip photo and a reminder that sometimes the best destinations are the ones you didn’t expect.
